What about carrots? Are they okay to eat?

Emilie, while carrots are really great for you and should be a part of your regular diet, they are not approved on this detox diet plan. That is solely because they are higher in carbohydrates than most vegetables. The point of this detox plan is to detox from carbohydrates, so they are a no-go during these 3 days. They are perfectly fine to eat after that though! I personally like them roasted in the oven with a little olive oil and cajun seasoning best!

what am I allowed to eat on day 3 if I don’t eat meat?

Protein shakes, egg whites, and fish are the next best options.

Would it be a good idea to continue the detox diet plan past 3 days? It really sounds like a detox I would love to try.

Oney, we can’t go into detail about that on this page, because it is a core part of our program, the 21-Day Fat Loss Challenge, and it wouldn’t be fair to our customers that have paid for the program. It’s a more extensive detox that helps you lose 7-10 pounds in the first week. Please check it out if you’re interested in doing a further detox! >> http://avocadu.com/21-day-fat-loss-challenge

Should you exercise on this dexox diet?

Emily, it’s up to you. We don’t recommend anything too intense such as running or weight lifting during the detox. Light exercise such as yoga or walking would be great though! I personally do yoga while I am detoxing or fasting.

I was looking for a two- or three-day detox and found yours. It really looks okay for me, but I am a vegan. What can I take instead of the animal products, like wheat protein, chicken, eggs etc.?

Tons of tofu and pea protein shakes would work. This is the problem with being a vegan -the protein is hard to come by. We totally respect the lifestyle (Lauren used to be one), but it makes things tricky when hitting all your nutrient requirements.

On day 2 how much veggies are allowed per meal?

As many low carb veggies as you like!

In terms of preparation of veggies, there is no baking or frying allowed?

Laura, they can be baked but no frying! Hope that helps!

Can the veggies be grilled with olive oil?

I’d avoid it. It contains a good amount of sugar and the purpose is to detox from carbohydrates.

On day 1, how much protein and veggies can be eaten on the 1st meal that breaks the fast?

Jessica, just make sure it’s about one serving (aka one chicken breast and 1-2 cups of veggies).

Would artichoke hearts packed in water (no/low sodium) be ok?

Also is butternut squash included in squash? If so would pure cinnamon powder be ok to add? (No sugar, etc.)

Tye, unfortunately no…Both artichokes and butternut squash are high-carbohydrate vegetables and therefore not approved on the detox.

In the approved list of vegetables you list both artichokes and squash , but then in one of your comments you say they’re not approved . Please clarify

You’re right, Ruth! I fixed it! Thank you for bringing it to my attention! Artichokes are not approved. Summer squash is approved, but butternut squash is not approved.

Would making a soup with the approved veggies on your list be okay than just having a mixture of veggies

Yes Marcy, that is fine!

I’m new to fasting but yours looks simple enough to try. I’m ready to get going today at 5 p.m. no more eating!

That’s great, Renee!

what about almonds?

like for protein day 3

Hey Destiny! Almonds are considered a fat source, not a protein source. They just aren’t high enough in protein compared to the fat content and calories.

Hi there! I came across this detox plan for I was long overdue for some cleansing. I’m on day two and I already feel a lot better! I will look into the 21 day detox plan but as for this one, how often would you recommend it be done? I usually do a detox with the change of seasons but I haven’t done them as often since I rid my diet of several common allergens such as eggs, dairy, gluten, and soy (via my nutritionist). However, I could see myself actually frequenting this detox plan more often. Would you say…Read more »

Hey Cassandra, I would recommend it once every couple of weeks or so. If you enjoy the detox, you really should take a look at our 21-Day Challenge. It extends this detox over the course of several days, and then slowly reintroduces carbohydrates. It will help you come up with a better long-term schedule and plan for detoxing.

Are cucumbers okay?

Hey Jericha! Yeah, cucumbers are fine!

Can you only drink plane water? Or is adding mint, lemons and limes ok?

Sorry spell check plain!!!!

Hey Leah! You mint, lemons, and limes are great! We didn’t specifically list cucumbers, but those are okay too!

Awesome! Thanks. Starting this at 5pm today

Very excited!

How much protein can you eat the first meal after fasting? What about the veggies? Really only shows how much protein for the 3rd day. Thanks!

There isn’t much of a limit for protein on that first meal after fasting, because your body is refueling. You usually want to try to stay at around 1 serving if possible. If the meat is very lean (as it should be), you can have more and be fine, because it’s so low in calories!

There is no limit to the veggies!

What it actually means to “detox…”

There’s a lot of uproar in the fitness community about detoxing and cleansing and whether or not it’s even possible. The problem is that people take things WAYYYYY to literally.

A detox simply means: a process or period of time in which one abstains from or rids the body of toxic or unhealthy substances.

In other words; to abstain. This doesn’t mean literally taking a scrub brush to the liver or any other mumbo jumbo like that.

It just means to allow the body to get rid of toxins and steering clear of unhealthy foods for awhile. This process allows the body to get some reprieve from the overload of crappy foods, alcohol, and sugars we normally eat.

The result is better health and energy. That’s exactly what this 3-day program is about and why you will feel much better after going through it.

What makes a great detox diet plan?

A great cleanse program can be defined by a couple of things: Simplicity and Results.

This detox diet plan focuses on minimizing hormonal responses and maximizing nutrient uptake.

No carbohydrates will be eaten during this process and lots of vegetables will be.

People are chronically overfeeding on carbohydrates (to the point of triggering pre and type II diabetes).

Most people are filled to the brim with glycogen and could use a period of abstinence.

Not eating carbs will help allow insulin to come down, leptin to increase, and the body’s hormonal responses to have a well deserved break.

Results to Expect:

Lose 3-4 pounds. Because of the minimizing of both calories and carbohydrates, you will see a fast weight drop. Some of this will be water weight unnecessarily held onto by the carbohydrates, and some will be fat that has been mobilized.

Tons of clean energy by the end of day 3. The first couple of days may be difficult and could even result in headaches, but that will pass. The body will begin to better absorb the nutrients it’s getting, and by day 3, you should feel pretty damn good.

More confidence. Completing any challenge and plan should give you a renewed sense of confidence and control. When you feel in control of your body, how it looks, and what it does, you will have a natural increase in confidence.

Let’s move onto the plan itself and get started…

3-Day Detox Diet Plan

fasting for a detox diet planDay 1. The 24-Hour Fast

Chances are that for some of our readers, red flags will raise from the term “fasting.”

Years of poor science perpetuating bad studies has led to a few stubborn myths in the fitness industry. One of the most unrelenting is about eating 6 meals a day.

This does not boost the metabolism.

6 meals a day is not better for the body than 1 or 15. A multitude of studies have confirmed this (study, study, study) and it’s important to understand for this next point…

Fasting, or not eating for periods of time, is incredibly good for the body.

Here are some of the proven benefits of fasting:

High growth hormone levels

Lower insulin

Increased metabolic rate

Reduction of oxidative stress

Lower blood pressure

Lower triglycerides

Better cholesterol

Improved cellular repair

Increased brain function and focus

Weight loss

Improved craving control

And sooooooo many more.

Still skeptical? Here is a great article by our friends at authority nutrition on the 10 Science-Based Health Benefits of Fasting.

Ok, so here is exactly how to do Day 1 on the detox diet plan:

At 5 pm the night before you start your plan, you will have your last meal. You will not eat again until the following evening at 5 pm.

During this time, you will be allowed no food and only these drinks:

When you break your fast at 5 pm the next evening, you are allowed to eat only approved protein sources and low-carb vegetables in one big meal.

Approved Proteins:

High Quality Whey Protein, Lean Chicken Breast, Lean Beef, Whole Eggs, Salmon, Cod, and Turkey

All cooking methods allowed except deep frying.

Approved Low Carb Vegetables:

Broccoli, Asparagus, Beets, Brussel Sprouts, Cauliflower, Celery, Kale, Mushrooms, Tomatoes, Spinach, Peppers, Onions, and Summer Squash.

Allowed cooking methods: Steamed, Microwaved, Raw, Boiled. You may also cook with extra virgin olive oil or coconut oil and lightly salt and pepper them.

detox diet plan vegetablesDay 2. Vegetable on Vegetables on Vegetables

Day 2 is very simple. I call this approach a “veggie fast,”or just think of it as a vegetable spree

Most people are chronically low on two things:

Vitamins and nutrients

This is how you remedy the situation. On day 2, consume nothing but the approved vegetables found above. These vegetables can be cooked in olive oil and lightly salted, but that’s it.

I recommend people break them up into 4 meals.

Example Schedule:

Wake up -11:00am -Fast

11:00am -Meal 1 (Veggies)

1:00pm -Meal 2 (Veggies)

5:00pm -Meal 2 (Veggies)

9:00pm- Meal 3 (Veggies)

The drinks allowed are black coffee, green tea, apple cider vinegar, and water.

If you’re finding it too difficult to fast in the morning, bump the first meal up when you need to. Some people respond better to fasting than others.

protein and vegetables diet for detoxDay 3. Vegetables and Protein

Day 3 is similar to day 2 with one small twist. During your 1st and 3rd meals, you will be adding in 25 grams of approved protein.

No additional flavoring may be added, only light salt, pepper, and cooking with extra virgin olive oil or coconut oil is allowed.

Example Schedule:

11:00am -Meal 1 (Veggies + 25 grams of approved protein)

1:00pm -Meal 2 (Veggies)

5:00pm -Meal 2 (Veggies + 25 grams of approved protein)

9:00pm- Meal 3 (Veggies)

That’s it!
